2023, a hinge of transformation

When a year goes by, we all find it hard to remember what happened. We leave you, as we do every year, our vision of what happened, milestones in the sector and what is to come.

When a year goes by, we all find it hard to remember what happened. The last quarter is more or less fresh in our minds, but what happened in January or February forces us to go back to the archive.

If we talk about global events of a general nature, we have experienced very significant climatological, political and sporting events. The coronation of Charles III; convulsions and political changes in countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, Guatemala, Paraguay or Spain; the continuation of the war between Russia and Ukraine as well as the outbreak of a new stage in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and many other not so newsworthy conflicts; the Mexican hurricane Otis, the drought, with reservoirs at historic lows or the most abnormal temperatures in recent times, with Spain suffering a heat wave in the month of April. Also sports news such as the Spanish national soccer team's world championship, Novak Djokovic's 24 Grand Slams or Messi's departure from Europe.

A year in which it is difficult to find positive news with a global impact, but we are finding green shoots.

Towards a construction that adds up

2023 has set the pace for positive construction. Our sector aims to be a favorable future asset and concepts such as circular construction do not just fill pages of books.

In a sector that is still highly polluting and has a high impact wherever it operates, this year 2023 modifications have been made and agreements have been reached to reverse this situation:

Update on the Sustainable Business Disclosure Directive (CSRD)

The evolution of the sustainability reporting process for companies marks an important milestone in the transformation of standards. Companies will move away from the practice of simply reporting "non-financial information" to a"sustainability reporting" approach. This involves disclosing both information essential to understanding economic performance, risks and opportunities, as well as data that illustrates the impacts of the company's activity on its social and environmental surroundings.

European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)

The sector faces significant pressures to reduce its environmental impact, as it accounts for 36% of global energy consumption and 40% of CO2 emissions.

To curb this, the proposal for the new EPBD is currently under discussion in the European Parliament, highlighting its priority focus on the renovation of buildings. The proposal includes measures to increase the frequency of renovation, modernize the built infrastructure or raise indoor air quality standards. It also sets an ambitious target of 11.7% energy efficiency for the European Union by 2030. From that date, 100% of energy consumption in new buildings is required to come from renewable sources.

Sustainable use of natural resources

Land degradation and pollution are key causes of the climate crisis. It is no secret that construction, as a major consumer and generator of waste, negatively impacts biodiversity and natural habitats. The European Commission adopted measures in 2023 to promote the sustainable use of resources, improve plant breeding materials and reduce waste.

Advocating the adoption of a sustainable approach is not just a moral decision; rather, it is an imperative requirement. It is not only a question of safeguarding economic advantages, but also of preserving our existence in the long term.

Our 2023 has not been just another year

For us, 2023 has been a very fruitful year, not only because of the growth in all of the company's business divisions, but also because we have taken on multiple projects with long-term projections.

This year we have delivered significant projects such as LaFinca Grand Café, LaFinca Gardenthe new Santiago Bernabéu, the Martiricos Towers in Malagathe Student Experience residence, the Calderón Operation or the Madrid Edition Hotel.

On the other hand, we have activated projects such as the Madnum Campus in MadridCampus, the MAD4 Data Center in Alcobendas or the new Club de Mar in Palma de Mallorca. As well as projects with a longer construction period, such as the megaproject Nuevo Chamartín or the the ONCE corporate headquarters.

We are also starting 2024 with new first-class projects, such as the Cabueñes Hospital in Gijón and the development of more than 3,000 homes for the Madrid Vive Plan. Plan Vive in Madrid.
