New Chamartín. The new Spanish mobility

Madrid will have a major railway station with two large terminals: Chamartín and Atocha. And it will be the main railway communication link at national level. This is how forcefully we can state what the new Chamartín Clara Campoamor station will be.

There is no other project in Spain as ambitious as the one being carried out at the Chamartín Clara Campoamor station.

In our company, the civil works division is one of the most outstanding and specialized areas in infrastructures throughout Spain. We have had the privilege of participating in large-scale projects, such as the remodeling of the M-30, in which we are still immersed, intermodal passenger stations, airports such as Madrid Barajas or La Palma, as well as the recent creation of the network of road links of the Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte project.

At the moment, in this division we are focused on a monumental project: the new Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor railway station.

The project aims to transform this station into a key reference point in the railway network throughout Spain.

The Chamartín refurbishment is, without a doubt, one of the most ambitious projects in which we have the honor of participating.

The numbers do not deceive

Some of the numbers in this project are noteworthy:

. Double the size of its global facilities.

. Transforming it into an enclave that will have little to do with the one that exists today, erected in the 70s, and all this without ceasing to be operational so as not to break the routine of thousands of users.

. 1 billion euros of investment.

. 400 operators working 24/7

. To increase current Cercanías users by 30% and multiply the number of high-speed rail passengers by 2 x 2, which in 2022 was 22.9 million.

. 25 tracks in total: 13 commuter tracks and 12 high-speed tracks, being the latter the ones that will cover all trains from the North, Murcia or Valencia.

. Increase the current 10,000 m2 lobby to 20,000 m2, with a width of 18 meters.

A station that is being reborn in order to accommodate a constantly growing flow of passengers.

Several phases and key dates

Phase 1 of this project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026, although work is underway on a second phase called Chamartin Open Ecosystem, which is currently in the design process and is expected to be implemented from 2030 onwards. This additional phase will include the construction of a large roof, the incorporation of green areas in the surrounding area and the creation of a satellite station.

Although the works may cause some temporary inconvenience to users, this Chamartín extension is essential to relieve congestion at Atocha station. To make this relief a reality, the focus will be on the high-speed tunnel that will run under the center of Madrid. Thus, when the Puerta de Atocha extension is completed and connected to this underpass, the concept of "one station, two terminals" will become a reality.

This will allow rail companies to schedule stops at either station, thus promoting sustainable, connected and smart mobility in the city.
