Interxion, one of the largest global providers of next-generation data centers, currently has 52 cloud data centers in a total of 11 European countries.
This company has been investing and trusting in the city of Madrid for years and with the opening of the new MAD4 they will create the largest data center in the city.
Until recently, Madrid had three Interxion data centers in Madrid (MAD1, MAD2 and MAD3) located in the San Blas-Canillejas district - theso-called Silicon Alley Madrid-. Located less than one kilometer from each other, they form a triangle where each side is 800 meters in a straight line and the fiber optic route is approximately one kilometer.
The exponential growth in the demand for connectivity and the growth of the Cloud have had a lot to do with the fact that MAD3, Interxion's third data center in Madrid and the space assigned to house the IT equipment of large companies such as Netflix, has seen its capacity completed in record time, which has accelerated the development of MAD4 even more.
When MAD4 opens soon, the four data centers are linked by fiber optic rings so that the entire infrastructure has the same multiple connectivity options, regardless of which building the customer is housed in.
MAD4, with a capacity to host 140,000 corporate servers, will be the largest data center in Madrid with a surface area of 35,000 m², spread over 4 floors, 30 MW of electrical power and 100% renewable energy.
It has been designed to host Cloud infrastructure projects, as well as colocation initiatives that require high availability and direct connectivity to large Cloud platforms, as is the case of IBM, the first confirmed customer of the new data center.
Interxion's investment in MAD4, which will be spread over several phases, amounts to 230 million euros. The first 5 MW of a total of 30 MW are currently under construction. Of this, 30% will be dedicated to IBM.
To optimize the construction process, the Construcía Group, builders responsible for the project and pioneers of circular construction, has applied the Lean Construction methodology, which increases efficiency by eliminating everything considered useless and avoiding the waste of materials, time and human resources.
After the inauguration of MAD3 in 2019, with MAD4, Madrid will succeed in consolidating itself as a major digital hub for the Iberian Peninsula, and could become the main content exchange node in southern Europe.
The future is already here, and we are part of it to make cities smarter and better places.
