Operation Calderón was a Madrid City Council project initiated in 2005 to improve mobility and reduce traffic on the M-30 through the construction of a 6.5 km tunnel across the Manzanares River. Construction of the tunnel began in 2007 and was completed in 2011. In 2022, the new route was inaugurated as it passes through the old Vicente Calderón stadium, and in 2023 the civil works to cover the M-30 are expected to be completed in order to complete the Madrid Río park.
Operation Calderón was a project launched by the Madrid City Council in 2005 with the aim of improving mobility in the city and reducing traffic on the M-30, Madrid's ring road. The initiative involved the construction of a 6.5-kilometer tunnel that would cross the Manzanares River and connect the A-5 with the A-2, allowing drivers to avoid the most congested section of the M-30.
Construction of the tunnel began in 2007 and was completed in 2011, at a total cost of more than €7 billion.
This roadway debuted a new route when it passed through the old Vicente Calderón stadium in November 2022. From then on, the lining project, completed in 2023, will focus on completing the civil works and connecting and integrating the new facilities into the control system of the rest of the tunnels that make up the M-30.
The work to cover the M-30 as it passes through the Mahou-Calderón area puts an end to a historic urban gap in the area and completes the Madrid Río park, thus completing the environmental, pedestrian and landscape continuity of one of the city's most important urban transformation projects of this century.
