The Isabel Zendal Hospital is a new hospital built by the Community of Madrid to reinforce the healthcare system and to be prepared for possible outbreaks of COVID-19 and other diseases. The hospital is 45,000 square meters in size, with more than 1,000 beds, ICU stations, diagnostic imaging and laboratory areas, and treatment rooms that can be converted into operating rooms if necessary. Its rapid construction was achieved thanks to the fast-track model, which made it possible to work in parallel on the design of the project and its execution. The hospital aspires to be a reference center for research, training, development of therapeutic solutions and storage of medical equipment.

Her name is a tribute to Isabel Zendal Gómez, considered by the WHO as the first woman nurse in history on an international humanitarian mission. Her role was fundamental to eradicate smallpox in the Balmis Expedition between 1803 and 1806.

With the construction of this new hospital, the government of the Community of Madrid seeks to "continue to strengthen the healthcare system in Madrid and to be prepared for possible outbreaks of COVID-19 and other diseases". In addition, the Isabel Zendal aims to be a reference center for research, training, development of therapeutic solutions and storage of medical equipment.

In order to respond to this vocation of being multipurpose, the space is structured in modular pavilions that make it possible to make the most of its 45,000 square meters of extension. With more than 1,000 beds in 20 hospitalization units, the hospital also has ICU stations, diagnostic imaging and laboratory areas. In addition, it houses treatment rooms for minor interventions that can be used as operating rooms if the situation so requires.

The secret of its rapid construction is the so-called fast-track model, which consists of working in parallel on the design of the project and its execution. Only in this way has it been possible to ensure that this project relieved the burden on other public healthcare centers in Madrid during the worst moments of the pandemic.
