One of our most emblematic projects, which represents the most modern and avant-garde part of Madrid, is celebrating its birthday. We are talking about the Cuatro Torres Business Area (CTBA), located on one of the main arteries of the capital, the Paseo de la Castellana. Considered to be one of the most important urban landmarks that Madrid has carried out in the last 25 years, Impernor Asbitra has put its excellence and quality in it thanks to the trust placed in us again by FCC CONSTRUCCIÓN, SACYR and VIRTON CONST.
On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, we would like to take a look at the history and most important features of one of the most representative faces not only of the capital, but of the country, since the four towers are among the top of the tallest skyscrapers in Spain. Their construction began in 2004 and they were inaugurated at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 under the official name: Cuatro Torres Business Area (CTBA). The four buildings that make up the Financial District of Paseo de la Castellana were erected on the grounds of the former Real Madrid Sports City, where a complex was developed consisting of open spaces, gardens and fountains, in addition to four skyscrapers with unique features that draw the skyline of the capital:
The Argentine architect César Pelli is the author of the project. With a height of 249 m and 52 floors, it is the tallest building in Spain. One of the most relevant features of this building, owned by Mutua Madrileña, is the 600 square meter garden located at the top.
With a height of 248 m and 45 floors, it is the second tallest building in Spain. Norman Foster designed this structure with two external reinforced concrete cores that organize the floors in a shelf-like fashion. Inside are the offices of Bankia and the headquarters of Cepsa.
It is the only one of the four that: has been designed by Spanish architects, Carlos Rubio Carvajal and Enrique Álvarez-Sala Walter; has a double skin facade; and is completely covered with glass as scales. The tower has a height of 236 m (58 floors), a floor plan in the shape of an equilateral triangle with curved sides and windows specially distributed to offer minimum wind resistance. It houses the five-star Eurostars Madrid Tower hotel and the PwC consulting firm.
Leoh Ming Pei and Henry N. Cobb. created this 57-story, 230-meter tower. Its ground plan has an initial quadrangular shape that gradually transforms into a form similar to the intersection of the sine and cosine functions. The building's image from every part of the city is different because it has a dynamic façade. It houses offices, a chapel and four embassies.
Currently, a new tower is emerging among the complex formed by the Cuatro Torres Business Area business park: Caleido, which will be the smallest building and will have an inverted T-shaped design, with 34 floors and 160 meters. Caleido is designed by the Spanish architectural firm Fenwick & Iribarren in co-authorship with Serrano-Suñer, and will house the Instituto de Empresa (IE) and the offices of the Quirónsalud Group. Its works have been awarded to the OHL group, a company with which we have already worked on other large projects, always obtaining the best results. For this reason, OHL has once again entrusted Impernor y Asbitra Asociados, S.L. with the study and prescription of this building, which will be operational in the last quarter of 2020.
