Acciona unifies its headquarters in a large sustainable business campus

Sustainability is now a key issue in all areas of life, including construction. More and more companies are seeking to reduce their carbon footprint at all stages of construction. One example of this is the "Campus Acciona Mesena Madrid" project, which is committed to the environment and sustainability.

Designing a better planet. That is the emblem of Acciona. Its purpose is none other than to help sustainable growth and improve people's lives. This is undoubtedly a very ambitious goal, but its latest project is no slouch either. It is the new "Acciona Mesena Madrid Campus", located in the Mesena-Gran Vía de Hortaleza Complex, where we have not only recovered a unique building, but we have also recovered the memory of Hortaleza, in the old Banesto offices. The purpose of the headquarters is to unify the entire staff in a single space. As could not be otherwise, it will be an environmentally friendly complex, in line with the company's values.

As it did in the past by awarding us the execution of its headquarters in the "La Moraleja" business park, our customer Acciona Infraestructurashas once again placed its trust in us to carry out what we do best, sustainable building in all our products and processes of waterproofing and insulation of this new campus, as the experience and quality of our work speaks for itself.

He has chosen us thanks to our special dedication to the co-creation of joint projects between the company and its clients, using the most innovative materials and construction systems on the market.

Undoubtedly, for Impernor Asbitra this project has been a great challenge. Everything had to be taken care of to the detail; with an exquisite quality, giving an impeccable production and installation service. However, the great challenges are the ones that move the world, so our team has put all its effort and professionalism to give the maximum in this great complex, achieving excellent results.

What is the project about?

Mesena is a project that will see the light in a few months, Mesena will consist of a complex of more than 100,000 square meters, located in the north of Madrid, in a residential area. The complex was for a long time the headquarters of Banesto and, later, of Banco Santander. The company plans to bring together in these buildings all the headquarters of its companies once they are refurbished based on a new design that will meet all needs and requirements.

The project was carried out by Fenwick Iribarren Architects. Its design contemplates the construction of new buildings, and the extension, restructuring, refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing ones, in a complex for tertiary use.

An unparalleled work

It consists of 7 buildings, of which the following buildings are under construction: "Cantabria" with 7,130 square meters, "Pedreña" with 6,100 square meters, "Magdalena" with more than 7,660 square meters and "Torre de valores", which is currently in the structural phase.

A campus for environmental interpretation

Sustainability will play a major role in the new complex, as stated by José Manuel Entrecanales Domecq, chairman of the Acciona Group. Thus, the company has arranged for the installation of new air conditioning equipment and boilers, as well as solar panels.

The Impernor Asbitra team is representing one of the most important parts, since we are in charge of the execution of the roofs, where we have taken special care of the thickness of the thermal insulation (150 mm thickness of xps) and the finish with (white filter tile 60/35), with a solar reflectance index greater than 76, which we have imported because there is no product of these characteristics in Spain. As usual we want to guarantee the highest quality.

For the formation of slopes it has been decided to use Arlita lightweight concrete, to lighten the load of the building as much as possible and improve its energy coefficient, the latest generation waterproofing system has been made with a double bituminous bitumen sheet of Elastomeric Bitumen LBM (SBS) - 40-FV and LBM (SBS) - 40-FP.

Due to this involvement, our work has been essential to comply with the reduction of energy intensity, which is why the project will have the LEED Gold and LEED Platinum seals, the highest certification in Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Design.

As a consequence of our leadership, sectorial specialization and strategic design in Sustainable Building, we have developed large projects in Corporate Headquarters with some of the main companies present in the IBEX 35.

Some of these projects are:

Bbva Headquarters (Las Tablas - Madrid) once again, together with Acciona Infraestructuras, we collaborated in the project, which stands out for its operation with recycling of natural resources and improvement in the working conditions of employees. For this reason it was awarded the "Leed Gold" certification, one of the most demanding sustainable construction standards in the world.

Repsol Headquarters: large project carried out with another of our consolidated clients, Sacyr, S.A.U., where the "Leed NC" certification with "Platinum" category was obtained. This headquarters was designed to adapt to its environment respecting sustainability criteria using renewable alternative sources.

Telefónica District: on this occasion, we worked with our clients F.C.C. Construcción, S.A. and Dragados, S.A., which successfully executed one of the pioneering projects in the use of renewable energies by taking advantage of solar energy. The buildings cover an area of 140,000 square meters which helped the project to stand out for having the largest solar energy production plant in Europe located on a rooftop.

The construction of Acciona's new headquarters has undoubtedly been a success, since all its workers will be unified in an extraordinary site that covers all the company's needs. Most importantly, it is a building that cares for and improves our planet. Something that, unfortunately, is very necessary.

The oldest operating factories

What does a factory's ability to stay in production depend on today? Design and construction, preventive maintenance, up-to-date technology, adaptation to market demands, efficient management? Aspects that, for the most part and within their historical context, were surely also shared in their beginnings by the longest-lived factories in the world that still maintain their original activity.
