Seat of the Castilla y León Parliament

Institutional projectsView site

In the heart of Valladolid stands an impressive building that represents the legislative power of the Community of Castilla y León. With a built area of almost 30,000 square meters, this modern seat of the Cortes de Castilla y León not only provides adequate and dignified facilities for the exercise of parliamentary duties, but also has the ambition of becoming one of the most representative buildings of the region. With impressive architecture and a privileged location, this building is undoubtedly a landmark in the history of contemporary architecture in Spain.

The Parliament of Castile and Leon has its headquarters in a modern and functional building located in one of the most thriving areas of Valladolid. Located at the foot of Avenida de Salamanca, the new headquarters, beyond providing adequate and dignified facilities for the exercise of parliamentary tasks, has the vocation of becoming one of the most representative buildings of the Community.

In its final definition, the building consists of four volumes and has a floor area of almost 30,000 square meters. The first volume, with a rectangular floor plan, consists of the ground, first and second floors. The exposed façade is made of white concrete, measuring 175 m long by 50 m wide. This volume opens with an open lattice on its west façade to the office spaces. On its east façade, under the Hemicycle, an opening has been opened up to the second floor, thus providing lighting conditions for the entrance area to the plenary hall. The height of this volume reaches 14.50 m.

The second corresponds to the library which, with horizontal strips of aluminum and glass protection, opens onto the inclined plane of grass that cuts the perspective from the Avenida de Salamanca. The third corresponds to the volume of the Hemicycle, with a floor plan of 26×26 m and a height of 13.30 m above the roof of the main volume. Its exterior façade has been designed in screen-printed glass using digitized alabaster images. The light penetrates into the interior through a second skin of alabaster, and filters the enclosure of the Hemicycle where hardwoods predominate. The fourth is the glass volume with a two-story curtain wall that rises from the roof of the basement. It is a volume of 150 m long by 10 meters wide, where the color of the tobacco glass allows a unitary reading of the projected volume.

The roof of the concrete base becomes, as established in the original project, the fifth façade, with a unique pattern of terraces and courtyards, through which light penetrates the building. Undoubtedly, this is a building that, from its position in the urban fabric of Valladolid, will contribute to the promotion of architecture in Castilla y León.
